The Polo Lounge -- one of LeRoy Neiman's (1921-2012) most famous and valuable works of art in his world famous career.
Created in 1988 and hand signed by Neiman, this detailed and nuanced art deco print features numerous actors together at this iconic location which became the hang-out spot for the most famous celebrities of Hollywood in the mid-late 1900s.
Early in grammar school, Neiman drew temporary tattoos on the arms of his classmates. He later earned money by sketching for local grocery stores, including portraits of the owners. In 1942, he was drafted into the army and served as a cook, where he later made murals on the walls of the mess hall. After World War II, Neiman was stationed in Germany and painted sets for Red Cross shows.
After the war, he attended the St. Paul, MN School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating he remained there to teach figure drawing and fashion illustration throughout the 50’s. He also worked freelance for the Carson Pirie Scott department store where he met his wife in 1957.
He also me Hugh Hefner, who was working as a copywriter for the store. Hefner got Neiman a job illustrating leisure around the world for the magazine. Hefner also contracted him to paint murals for the Playboy clubs around the world. His fame took off after this and his prints of famous actors, sports events, athletes and other iconic subjects began selling for thousands of dollars later in the 20th century.
Polo Lounge is a classic and in many major art collections around the world.
